Part of living a dynamic life means knowing how to celebrate and have fun. Allowing yourself to go off balance is part of balance and moderation. For my birthday weekend, alcohol, gluten, and refined sugars were consumed (without judgment, of course!). This felt right for the weekend.

Now I re-balance. This is the other part of living a dynamic life: knowing how to come back into balance lovingly. After consuming toxins, there are a few key ways to bring yourself back into balance. One is the green and alkalizing way.

alkaline vs. acidic foods. In brief, if a food has alkaline ash it means that it does not produce acid in the intestinal system. Acidic blood and intestinal pH levels have been associated with fatigue, headaches, muscle aches and pains, sore pressure points, excess weight, blood sugar imbalances, and excessive yeast populations. Eating alkaline foods help to increase the pH of the blood stream. To check out foods that promote alkaline living, I find this helpful.

green smoothies. Most green smoothies are loaded with fruit and with a touch of a green they look healthy. Yet, with the intense fruit sugars they raise your pH and acid levels in the blood.

the alkaline green smoothie

I discovered this alkaline green smoothie on a few months ago. It’s truly magical. Its not just any green smoothie. Though it may look scary, the mint, ginger, and lime give it fresh taste, making the consumption of kale and avocado an even more delicious experience.

Udo’s Oil. This recipe calls for this slightly expensive ingredient. It is a mix of flax oil, sunflower oil, coconut oil, etc. Now I’ve already been asked whether this is needed. My answer is yes, especially if you’re vegetarian. It is an awesome source for Omega -3, -6, and -9 fatty acids. Since I’ve been adding it to foods, I’ve noticed a difference in my cognitive functions, skin, and hair.

Alkaline Green Smoothie. yield- 1 smoothie approx 12-16oz

  • 6″ piece of cucumber
  • 3 medium kale leaves, torn
  • 5 stems fresh mint
  • 3 stems fresh parsley
  • 1″ piece fresh ginger
  • 1 avocado
  • 1 cup coconut water
 (buy the unsweetened, unflavoured version)
  • fresh juice of one lime
  • 1-2 tsp udo’s oil
  • 1-2 tbsp hemp seeds
  • 1 tsp of maple syrup (2-3 drops stevia or a tsp of agave
 are wonderful too)

Place all ingredients into high speed blender and mix until smooth, adding a filtered water if needed for consistency. [adapted from alkalinesisters.com]

Note:If you find the whole avocado too much (some people need more avo throughout the day), feel free to replace it with low sugar fruits like blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries. Adding some of your fresh almond milk is a nice treat as well!

Enjoy, my loves!
